While robots can assist with certain aspects of learning, they cannot replicate the emotional intelligence and empathy that human educators bring to the classroom. As Darrell Billington, a veteran social studies teacher, points out, a strong teacher-student relationship is essential for meaningful learning, and AI has not yet proven capable of replicating that.

Cynthia Breazeal’s research into social robots has shown that, when used correctly, AI can contribute to children’s learning, particularly in language development. In her studies with Tega, a teddy bear-sized robot, children exhibited notable improvements in vocabulary and persistence when interacting with the robot. However, the broader concern remains the ethical implications of AI in education, including issues related to data privacy, bias, and the emotional consequences of replacing human interaction with machines. However, educators like Billington recognize that while AI can assist in these areas, it cannot replace the personal connections that are integral to the educational experience. As he notes, “If AI could help us figure out a way to grade faster, that would be amazing.” All in all, educators must come to grips with the idea that AI will likely become an increasing part of the educational landscape, but it will require careful integration to ensure that it complements, rather than replaces, the role of human teachers.
